Young Fox

My father, Tom MacLeod, took this photo in 1928. He told me about it but could never find it. It turned up years later when Willie Mackay (The Town) rescued some photos when Duguid died and his house was cleared out.

In the foreground is “Young Fox”, possibly the last time she was in the Firth as she foundered off Tarbat Ness on 6th December 1928, bound for Portmahomack with a cargo of coal from Sunderland. All hands were lost, but crew member George MacFarlane from Fortrose, was not needed on the last leg of the trip from Burghead and he returned home by train.

In the background is HMS Rodney, her first time in the Firth. She was based here from May to August 1928 with the Home Fleet.

Captain Mackintosh, of the Young Fox, came from Invergordon. Of his five grandchildren: Betty has passed away, Bobby, Davey and Isobel still live in Invergordon and Helen lives in Nairn.
