Can anyone tell me where the water came from before this, and also, why the Invergordon water was 'hard'?

Hard to say David, but my guess would be the same location but wells maybe.
Re hardness, doubt it as the water in that area is soft as is most of Scotland, but you could check with Scottish Water.
