The West Pier is in the foreground, looking across the harbour mouth to the Centre Pier.

This was a favourite gathering place for the pensioners. I remember a bench "The pensioners bench" being located at the West pier. The centre pier was where the cement boats would be. I remember Hec Macrae giving me a job manning the rope and pulling the slings across onto an awaiting lorry. It was good pay and Hec was very fair when it came to pay and always on time....

Harry, your comment above also reminded me of Hec and having worked with him as a 15 year old on a few cement boats both at Invergordon and Cromarty, leaving early in the morning to get to the latter, by sea of course. It was hard and indeed dirty work lugging these 1cwt bags around. It's interesting these days to see the struggle guys have with 25kg bags, which are only half the size/weight. The practice I had helping my grandfather stacking or loading bales at Inverbreakie in my very early teens stood me in good stead. At least with Hec I got paid.

That is indeed interesting Helen, I lived on Outram Street and remember when the Macraes lived there. I remember Granny Macrae in particular but not your grandfather..

Hello Harry, my grandfather, Richard MacRae, passed away, around 1937. This postcard photo was in family albums, here in Australia.
