Balintraid Tattie Harvesting 1962
This photo came from the late John Forsyth who had Balintraid Farm. An early tattie harvester with hand pickers onboard pulled by a Nuffield tractor that would have come from Willie Munro the local dealer. The early Ferguson tractor probably came from Mackays in Dingwall and would originally have had a petrol engine but it now has a Perkins P3 Diesel transplant for more power and cheaper fuel . The bonnet is higher when a Perkins is fitted.

Well that is high tec compared to when I went tattie picking. It was either the windmill machine whch scattered the spuds all over your patch or the more preferable conveyor belt machine which left them in a row. Either way,your back knew about it later!

Ralph,who sold these tattie harvesters ,said it is a Grimme Universal Harvester. It did not like wet soil conditions. No bending but still hard work involved.
