Does anyone remember climbing up to Fyrish and looking at the weird monument up on the top? This was one of our adventure trips when we were younger, about 1946 time. We used to cycle to the back of Alness and then climb up a track.

Hi Doug, I think everyone climbs it at least once. There are two tracks, one right around the back and up a steep track or the Jubilee path which was redone about twelve years ago when the monuments were pointed and built up and a new bridge was put over the burn. You can't get a better view. My mum remembers climbing it nearly sixty years ago with Barbara and Billy Clark but straight up the front through the trees from Novar. She said you saw nothing until you were at the top.

Strangely, I never climbed Fyrish, probably too lazy, but my two kids (now aged 38 and 40) climbed it on more than one occasion with their mother. Indeed, my son Scott Fraser ran the Fyrish Hill Race a few times in the '80s and won it on each occasion if I remember correctly. I don't know if they still run that race.
