This pier was known as the East Pier and remains to this day. Although it is now much shorter, it forms the eastern boundary of the 'West Harbour'. A short section of the railway line can still be seen on the pier.
The large building that can be seen to the left on the harbour front front is now occupied by J. P. Knight Engineering. The buildings to the right disappeared when the ring road was put in. However, the two on the right beyond the ship's masts still exist.

I can remember dancing the Highland Fling on a pontoon platform that was taken round between the piers for a Regatta, sometime around 1936 or so.

In my day which would be the 40's and 50's the piers were known as 1st pier 2nd pier, this one would have been the 2nd pier. My grandfather Farquar Dunn (Fachy) was the engineer on the Harbour Master's Launch, which was most times docked at this pier. His job was to take the Pilot out at all hours to bring in the ships Tankers etc..he did it for at least 30 years and he could not swim a stroke...he was more like a father to me as my father died as a result of the war. My grandfather was a good man and I miss him...

Janet Robb could be referring to picture #263 - makes comment on doing the highland fling on a pontoon platform - this could be her.

The pier in the foreground was referred to as the Centre Pier for as long as I can remember, but could well have been East pier prior to construction of the first Dockyard pier.
