Malcolm, it is nice to see the fields. This must be from around Kincraig? with the Black ditch showing. If so, there used to be an ice house nearby the cottages.

Yes Harry, this was taken on the road up to Lower Kincraig Farm with the Black Ditch running left to right mid picture.
It's interesting you mention the Ice House as the old Ordnance Survey map of 1880 shows this in the woods of the Castle grounds, east of the Castle.

That is correct Malcolm, the ice house would have been a bit east of the castle just as these cottages are, but back into the wood more, probably long gone now but may be some remnants left.

The derick of the rig looks a bit out of place, peeping up over the top of the trees!!

Jillian, it's the top of the Transocean Rather (22,052 tonnes), a semi-submersible drilling rig which is at the Service Base. It's about 140 feet high so it's no surprise that it towers over the local scenery. For comparison, Newmore Primary School is at about the same height above sea level.

Malcolm
My great great grandfather lived in a croft at Lower Kincraig from sometimes in the 1850's until his death in 1864. I was wondering are these cottages called Lower Kincraig Cottages and how old are they ?

Hi Neil, always knew these as the castle cottages, on the private castle grounds. Lower Kincraig is across the big ditch..if you google search Lower Kincraig cottages you will find a map and if you click on the map it will enlarge...

Harry
Thanks for this. How old are the Lower Kincraig cottages?
Added by Neil Mclennan on 01 August 2025
Neil, sorry I can't help you there.
I forgot to mention that you can navigate the map.
Good luck
