I worked on this boat and others as a teenager during the school holidays in 1971 and 1972, Mr Hankey would pick me up on the A9 on his way to work in the morning and drop me off after work on the way home. I remember unloading and stacking timber, helping to carry planks from the steamer into the shed, painting the insides of the hulls with preservatives, caulking seams and endless sweeping and cleaning around the shed. My pay went towards the cost of Ferindonald. I was her “skipper” and motored her around the Cromarty and Beauly Firths often running aground on the sand banks trying to get back to Ardullie Point which was her home on a falling tide (no GPS in those days just dead reckoning). She was a lovely wee craft with an old two cylinder Lister air cooled diesel engine started by turning the fly wheel with a hand crank and boy did she run hot! Other memories sweet tea and meat pies in the lunch room. I am Captain Munro’s middle son and have enjoyed a lifetime of boating ever since, including two transatlantic crossings in sailing yachts.
